After securing the shore, you confront the challenge of transporting your elephants. The Rhone was raging and the beasts' Indian handlers tried without success to lead them onto the wooden rafts. Finally, earth was lain over the boat decks and the handlers led two females first onto the raft and the rest followed. The rafts were guided by cable across the rushing river. Most elephants - though terrified - held their ground until the passage was complete. But some jumped from the boats - drowning their handlers, but surviving by walking along the bottom of the river and breathing through their trunks.
