You send Alorcus, a Spaniard soldier friendly with the Saguntines who serves in your army to make peace with the besieged city. He checks his weapons at the gates of Saguntum and is escorted by the guards to meet the Saguntine praetor. Immediately the city rushed to the senate to hear Alorcus’ words: "You are vanquished. You neither have any hope from the Romans, nor your own arms nor walls to protect you. I offer you favorable terms of peace. Give up your failed alliance with the Romans, who have abandoned you here to die. Instead, Hannibal will let you keep your city and let your families live – but you must pay a heavy tribute to Carthage."
