In the morning, the barbarians begin to ford the river in order to lie in ambush on the far side of the river where they will have the advantage - all the while thinking you are still camped in your original position.  Anticipating this, you line your elephants in front of your infantry and place your cavalry directly across the ford from the barbarians. No sooner does the enemy begin to cross then you surprise them with your full cavalry.
